Karl Lagerfeld’s New Film Traces Coco Chanel’s 1954 Comeback

Karl Lagerfeld needs no introduction as a fashion designer nor as a photographer. The multi-tasker fashion-maverick has also held on to his film-maker’s crown by conceptualizing and directing another short film. Set to debut on December 10th 2013 in Dallas, The Return is a film imagined, written and directed by Karl Lagerfeld.
Karl_Lagerfeld_Film_The_Return_2The 30 minute fashion movie will be followed by the 2013/14 Métiers d’Art runway show, titled “Paris-Dallas”. The Technicolor film features Geraldine Chaplin in the role of Gabrielle Chanel along with Rupert Everett, Anna Mouglalis, Lady Amanda Harlech, Arielle Dombasle and Kati Nescher, as well as Vincent Darré and Sam McKnight. After exploring Gabrielle Chanel’s early days in Karl’s previous short film Once Upon a Time, this latest big budget costume drama highlights Coco Chanel’s comeback in 1954. Also the creative designer cleverly recreated Coco’s Rue Cambon studio and salon complete with its mirrored staircase. It depicts her struggle to impress the press with her collection and also brings to light the support of Dallas-based Neiman Marcus, which triggered her success. Quoting straight from the director’s chair, Karl told WWD, “It’s America who rediscovered her, so this is a thank you. Without America, she would have closed the entire operation.”
Karl_Lagerfeld_Film_The_ReturnBearing an uncanny resemblance to the protagonist, Charlie Chaplin’s daughter has immaculately portrayed the role of the emerging designer. Chanel muse Amanda Harlech plays Vogue editor Bettina Ballard and Rupert Everett scores well an American television journalist. The team also included more from Chanel members like hairstylist Sam McKnight plays François, Chanel’s favorite butler and seamstresses from the Chanel atelier.

Daily Dream Home: Centennial Tree House

Wallflower Architecture + Design have designed a home that encloses the owners’ privacy within a contemporary environment. The Centennial Tree House in Singapore displays a fixed timber screen facade that implies a very private lifestyle, but it also celebrates the connection to nature by protecting and accentuating the presence of a large rescued tree in the middle of the house.
This private need is explained by the ones who created a stunning modern residence according to the owner’s wishes: “Introversion has a negative connotation in a culture where being social and outgoing are prized above all else. But what is withdrawal to some is energizing for those who thrive on self-reflection and contemplation; life is found within.”
Light and air are welcomed inside via a central courtyard where a hundred year old frangipani tree thrones surrounded by water. Social living spaces are organized around the courtyard on the first floor, leaving the second floor for the private areas. Electrically-operated shutters are used to allow the perfect amount of light inside, while the light shifts from morning until evening, giving a dynamic life to the modern architecture.
