LG’s flexible smartphone is coming to Europe

+LG has announced that its G Flex handset will be coming to European shores in December once it has officially launched in its homeland on November 12.
The company says that Orange France will be the first network operator to start offering the phone – which curves from top to bottom and is therefore not to be confused with Samsung’s Galaxy Round, which curves from side to side — outside South Korea, and it will go on sale in time for Christmas.
So far, there’s no word on how much the device will cost early adopting Europeans but LG has confirmed that in Korea it will go on sale for 999,900 Won — that’s about €700.
Flexible display technology could prove revolutionary: if a screen can be bent in half or rolled into a cylinder, then companies will no longer be confined to building rigidly square or rectangular devices.
It would also mean that tablets could have massive 20-inch screens, but then neatly fold up to be easily carried in a handbag. That’s a vision of the future. In the present, because batteries, camera lenses, and processors are still distinctly rigid, all that’s possible are the curved handsets that LG and Samsung have just launched.
The LG G Flex uses the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor found in the +Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and LG’s own less flexible G2 flagship — so it won’t be lacking for speed or multitasking performance. It also has a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, and a less than full HD, 720p display.
However, what it loses in resolution, it makes up for in Terminator-esque self-healing properties. Thanks to a special coating on its case, surface scratches on its sides and rear should magically disappear.

Project Ara by Motorola lets consumers customize their smartphone

Motorola has announced Project Ara – a new initiative that allows consumers to customize their smartphone beyond color, ringtones and wallpaper. Project Ara allows a user to purchase a basic phone structural frame (called an Endo) and add modules such as the keyboard, camera, battery, and display.

The approach allows users to customize a phone to their specifications (and price tag). A consumer who wants a top of the line camera can simply have installed in the camera.

The modular approach would also allow for easier repairs and upgrades, since a specific module can be swapped out without much effort.

Google-owned Motorola will use the Android OS for the new phones.

Project Ara is an intriguing enterprise. And a challenging one. But we like the idea of putting the building blocks into the hands of the consumer. Kudos to Motorola for embarking on such an endeavor.

First photo of the iPhone 5S in ‘champagne’

TechCrunch has published the first photos of the iPhone wearing its new shiny coat. In addition to the traditional black and white, Apple’s next smartphone will reportedly be available in a pale gold color.

In addition to the traditional black and white models, the forthcoming iPhone 5S could also be available in a flashier version, all in gold, according to American tech specialist website TechCrunch.
Apple’s new smartphone will be presented on September 10, most likely alongside a more affordable version of the device, dubbed the iPhone 5C.
According to these rumors, Apple may introduce a new “champagne” color to the iPhone range. The shimmery gold shade is said to be easily obtained by anodizing the smartphone’s aluminum casing.
Well-heeled Apple fans can already purchase iPhones made of solid gold, or even encrusted with diamonds, through brands such as Amosu or Goldgenie, for several thousand euros, but the “champagne” iPhone would present a more affordable alternative for fans of metallic colors.
Readers of TechCrunch commented that an iPhone with a gold case would likely sell particularly well in the Chinese and Indian markets, where the color is popular.

The Vertu Constellation: a $6600 Android phone

Once upon a time, the Vertu phone was the epitome of smartphone luxury, thanks to its 24/7 concierge hotline, which essentially made it an American Express black card that could make phone calls.

As such, just like the BlackBerry for businessmen, it quickly became the must-have gadget for socialites and sports stars alike. It might not have had the best camera or the richest display but where most handsets featured plastics, Vertu’s featured stainless steel, titanium, silver, gold and even carbon fibre.
But just like with BlackBerry, something called the iPhone came along and changed everything. Here was a phone that was desirable because it looked good and offered easy access to the internet and then to a multitude of apps, not because it was gold-plated, and Vertu, like its then-parent company, Nokia had to go back to the drawing board.
Today the company exists as an independent business and its latest handsets, like those that went before, put build quality above internal specifications, but Symbian has made way for Android, and the concierge service has got an update with a host of exclusive tailored and curated content and offers to invite-only and secret events from a number from a number of Vertu partners.
And the latest Vertu handset, the Constellation, is no exception. It can’t compete with other flagship Android devices like the Samsung Galaxy SIV in terms of performance — it boasts a 1.7Ghz dual-core processor and 32GB of internal storage– but the phone’s chassis is made not from plastics but from titanium which is stronger, lighter and more expensive than steel.
Then there’s the 4.3-inch 720p display which on its own isn’t exceptional, but what does make it much better is the fact that is covered by a sheet of sapphire glass. Even its case, available in a range of not so subtle colors is cut from the finest quality calfskin. The Constellation retails for €4,900 or $6630.

Jean Paul Gaultier reveals iPhone accessories

Jean Paul Gaultier has unveiled a range of five different mobile phone and tablet accessories, working with French company Bigben connected, which already creates accessories for Kenzo and Swarovski.
All the pieces are inspired by three of the JPG brand’s key motifs: the Breton mariniere striped sweater, sailor tattoos, and the “boîte de conserve” tin can.
Priced between €19.90 and €49.90 the cases are set to hit French fashion and mobile phone stores this month, as well as Parisian concept store Colette.
